A FOILED TEMPLE ATTACK PLOT SPARKS A DIPLOMATIC WARNING FROM NEW DELHI: INDIA DEMANDS ACCOUNTABILITY AS CONCERNS OVER ANTI-INDIAN HATRED GROW IN AMERICA

October 15, 2026

NEW DELHI — India has called on the United States to conduct a thorough investigation into an alleged plot to carry out a mass shooting at a Hindu temple in Aurora, Illinois, warning that the reported anti-Hindu and racist motives behind the plan have intensified concerns about hostility towards Indians and the Indian-American community.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed deep concern on Thursday following the arrest of a 19-year-old man, identified as Alexandros Paporakis, in connection with threats of a potential mass shooting targeting a Hindu place of worship in the Aurora area.

In its statement, the MEA described the alleged plot as particularly disturbing because of reported references to violence against people of Indian origin. The ministry said the incident added to growing concerns over racist hostility and anti-India hatred in the United States and called for greater vigilance, zero tolerance for hate-motivated violence and decisive action to protect the Indian community.

India has urged American authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly, bring those responsible to justice and take appropriate steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Alleged plot uncovered after electronic messages were reported

According to American law-enforcement authorities, the investigation began on October 11 after the Palatine Police Department received information from the Mount Prospect Police Department about a possible mass-shooting threat. The information originated from an individual who reported receiving concerning electronic messages allegedly sent by Paporakis.

Investigators subsequently uncovered a document that allegedly outlined a plan to carry out a mass shooting at a Hindu temple. The suspect had also reportedly shared images of a rifle, rifle magazines, body armour and other tactical equipment.

Police arrested Paporakis as he was leaving his residence. A subsequent search of his home resulted in the recovery of a rifle, several loaded rifle magazines, hundreds of additional rounds of ammunition and tactical equipment.

Investigators also recovered a tactical vest fitted with body armour and a patch displaying imagery associated with white-supremacist extremism.

Authorities examined electronic communications and a document attributed to the suspect titled Why I Fought: A.K.A.: (Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto). According to investigators, the document contained white-supremacist and extremist views, including references to violence against people of South Asian heritage, particularly those of Indian descent.

Police believe the suspect may have been preparing to carry out an attack on October 11, potentially targeting a Hindu place of worship in the Aurora region. Following the investigation, law-enforcement authorities contacted Hindu places of worship within their jurisdiction to alert them to the reported threat.

Suspect ordered to remain in custody

Paporakis faces one count of making a terrorist threat, classified as a Class X felony, and one count of unlawful possession of weapons. Following a detention hearing, a judge ordered that he remain in custody.

The charges and allegations remain subject to the American judicial process. The reported evidence and the arrest indicate the seriousness with which investigators are treating the suspected plan, but the allegations have yet to be established through a final judicial determination.

The rapid intervention by American law-enforcement agencies appears to have prevented the alleged plan from progressing to an actual attack. Indian authorities have acknowledged the importance of the response while emphasising the need for continued vigilance.

Indian government calls for decisive action

The MEA’s statement reflects New Delhi’s concern not only about the specific alleged plot but also about the wider safety of Indians and people of Indian origin living in the United States.

The ministry stressed that the reported targeting of a Hindu temple on the basis of anti-Hindu and racist hostility demanded a comprehensive investigation and effective preventive measures. It also called for those responsible to face justice.

The Indian Consulate General in Chicago had earlier welcomed the timely intervention by American law-enforcement agencies and said it was closely monitoring developments while remaining in contact with members of the Indian diaspora.

The incident has renewed attention to the security of Hindu religious institutions in the United States. For many Indian-American families, temples serve as centres of worship, cultural activities and community life, making threats against them a source of deep anxiety.

The case also underscores the importance of reporting credible threats promptly and ensuring effective coordination between local police departments, federal authorities and religious institutions.

A broader challenge for community safety

The alleged plot has become a stark reminder of the potential consequences of extremist ideologies when they are directed against religious and ethnic communities. Indian officials have stressed that hate-motivated violence must be confronted decisively before threats translate into physical attacks.

For Washington, the investigation will be an important test of the response to threats against a religious minority and the protection of Indian-American communities. For New Delhi, it is a matter of concern involving the safety and security of its diaspora and the need for effective cooperation with American authorities.

The immediate priority remains establishing the full circumstances of the alleged plot, assessing any continuing threat and ensuring that Hindu places of worship receive appropriate protection.

India’s message is clear: the alleged targeting of a temple because of anti-Hindu or anti-Indian hatred demands a thorough investigation, accountability under the law and concrete steps to prevent similar threats from endangering communities in the future.
