A GIANT COCKROACH JOINS RAVANA IN DELHI’S DUSSEHRA SPECTACLE AMID POLITICAL SPECULATION
October 16, 2026
NEW DELHI, OCTOBER 16: A 30-foot-tall cockroach effigy is set to be burnt alongside the traditional effigy of Ravana at a Ramlila celebration in Delhi, adding an unusual attraction to this year’s Dussehra festivities and triggering speculation over its possible political significance.
The proposed burning has drawn attention because of the cockroach’s association with the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), a political outfit that has recently attracted attention through protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The timing and symbolism of the effigy have therefore prompted questions about whether the spectacle carries a political message.
However, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA associated with the event has denied that the initiative has any political motive, maintaining that it should not be interpreted as an attempt to target a particular political organisation.
The burning of Ravana’s effigy is a longstanding Dussehra tradition symbolising the triumph of good over evil. The addition of the enormous cockroach figure has introduced a contemporary and controversial element to the celebration, drawing attention beyond the customary religious and cultural symbolism of the festival.
The episode illustrates how public festivities can become subjects of political interpretation, particularly when unusual symbols appear amid an atmosphere of heightened political confrontation. Despite the speculation, the BJP MLA’s denial leaves the proposed spectacle officially presented as separate from partisan politics.
