AAP FACES FRESH POLITICAL TURMOIL AS KUNWAR VIJAY PRATAP SINGH RESIGNS FROM PUNJAB ASSEMBLY
November 2, 2026
CHANDIGARH: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) faced another political setback in Punjab on Monday, November 2, after suspended party leader and Amritsar North MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh resigned from the Punjab Legislative Assembly, amid expectations of his political shift to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer submitted his resignation to Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan, stating that his resignation would take effect from November 1, 2026. He also announced his departure from the AAP and communicated his decision to party leaders Arvind Kejriwal and Aman Arora.
Addressing his constituents through a public statement, Singh thanked the people of Amritsar for their support and claimed that he had completed approximately 90 per cent of the targets he had set as an MLA. He emphasised his commitment to clean politics, transparent administration and addressing issues such as drug abuse, extortion, gangsterism and corruption in Punjab.
Singh had been suspended from the AAP for five years in June 2025 over alleged anti-party activities. His differences with the party leadership had intensified after he questioned the Punjab Vigilance Bureau's action against Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia. He had also repeatedly criticised the state government's handling of the 2015 sacrilege and police-firing cases.
His resignation followed the departure of two other AAP legislators, Chetan Singh Jouramajra and Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra, who resigned from the party's primary membership on Sunday.
The three leaders subsequently joined the BJP in New Delhi on Monday, adding a new dimension to Punjab's political developments ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. The successive departures have intensified political pressure on the ruling AAP as preparations for the upcoming electoral contest gather momentum.
