The Allahabad High Court has reaffirmed that an adult woman cannot be compelled to live with her parents or any other person against her wishes, stressing that an adult has the legal autonomy to decide where and with whom she wants to live.

The court was hearing a case involving the parents of an adult daughter who sought judicial intervention concerning her place of residence. The court declined to treat adulthood as a condition in which parental preference could override an individual’s own decision.

The ruling emphasises the importance of personal liberty and individual choice, recognising that an adult citizen is entitled to make fundamental decisions about her own life without coercion, provided those choices are lawful.

The court’s observation also reinforces the broader constitutional principle that personal freedom does not disappear because a person is a daughter or remains connected to her family. Family relationships, the court indicated, cannot automatically become a legal basis for restricting an adult’s freedom of movement or residence.

The ruling is significant in the context of cases involving family disputes, where courts are sometimes approached to determine the residence or custody of adult children. The judgment places individual autonomy at the centre of such disputes and reiterates that an adult woman’s wishes must be respected within the framework of law.
