Serious allegations of police brutality have emerged following the detention of protesters during a demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in the Connaught Place area of New Delhi.
A detained protester has alleged that police personnel assaulted individuals inside a police vehicle, slapped and kicked detainees, and targeted some in their private parts. The protester further claimed that an inspector forced a detainee to disclose his mobile phone password and subsequently deleted photographs and videos, including files in the recently deleted folder.
According to the account, several detainees were taken to an isolated location where access by media personnel and other civilians was restricted. The protester also alleged that four minors present in one compartment appeared frightened and remained unattended for nearly two hours despite police personnel having their details.
The allegations extended to the alleged denial of prompt medical assistance to a detainee with a fractured hand, who reportedly required first aid. The protester also claimed that internet connectivity was disrupted, making it more difficult to bring the incident to public attention.
The incident has intensified scrutiny of police conduct during the demonstrations against the Chief Election Commissioner. However, the allegations could not be independently verified, and Delhi Police had not responded to the charges despite multiple queries at the time of publication.
