Captain Smit Machchhar has emerged at the centre of international attention after a violent cockpit confrontation aboard a Flydubai aircraft placed 174 lives in danger and forced the flight into an emergency descent.

Machchhar was commanding flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv when the co-pilot allegedly attacked him with a knife inside the cockpit. The assault left the Indian captain seriously injured as the aircraft was flying at approximately 30,000 feet.

Despite his injuries, Machchhar continued attempting to prevent the situation from turning into a loss of control. During the struggle, he managed to open the cockpit door, enabling passengers and crew members to enter and assist in restraining the attacker.

The aircraft reportedly plunged more than 17,000 feet during the crisis before control was restored. Pilots travelling as passengers also helped the flight crew, after which the aircraft was diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia and landed safely.

Machchhar was taken to hospital after landing for treatment. The co-pilot was also placed under medical care and subsequently came under the custody of Saudi authorities as investigators began examining the circumstances surrounding the attack.

The captain’s path to the cockpit was itself unconventional. Born in Mumbai, Machchhar initially studied textile engineering before pursuing management studies and later moving to New Zealand for professional pilot training. He joined SpiceJet in 2011 and subsequently moved to Flydubai in 2022.

Over the course of his aviation career, Machchhar accumulated thousands of hours of flying experience and held responsibilities involving both passenger operations and pilot training. His experience became crucial during the emergency as he attempted to maintain control of the aircraft while dealing with his own injuries.

The incident has triggered investigations in several jurisdictions, including questions over the motive behind the attack and whether it was planned. Authorities are also examining cockpit security and the circumstances that allowed the confrontation to escalate inside the flight deck.

For the passengers aboard FZ1073, the flight became an extraordinary struggle for survival. For Machchhar, the emergency transformed an ordinary commercial journey into one of the most dramatic episodes of his fly
