CAPTAIN SMIT MACHCHHAR’S COURAGE UNITES POLITICAL LEADERS IN PRAISE AFTER FLYDUBAI COCKPIT ATTACK

October 1, 2026

Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar has received widespread appreciation from political leaders across party lines after he sustained serious injuries while resisting an alleged mid-air attack by his co-pilot aboard a Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.

President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan and several Union ministers praised Machchhar for his presence of mind and determination to protect the lives of those on board. Leaders from opposition parties, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal, also joined in commending his actions.

The incident occurred aboard flight FZ1073, which was carrying 174 people. The co-pilot allegedly stabbed Machchhar and attempted to interfere with the aircraft's operation, triggering a serious emergency at cruising altitude. Despite being gravely injured, the captain managed to open the cockpit door, enabling passengers and crew members to intervene and restrain the attacker.

The aircraft made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where Machchhar was admitted to hospital. He was reported to be in stable condition and receiving medical treatment. Other pilots travelling as passengers helped take control of the aircraft and divert it safely.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu were among those who expressed appreciation for the captain's actions. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis described Machchhar as a source of pride for Mumbai, while Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren also praised his courage and commitment to duty.

Ajay Singh, chairman of SpiceJet, where Machchhar had previously worked for more than a decade, said the airline and the country were proud of the captain's actions. Machchhar joined Flydubai in 2022 after serving in several flying and training roles at the Indian carrier.

The incident has also prompted questions about cockpit security, particularly how a sharp weapon was allegedly brought into the flight deck. Aviation experts have called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack, while authorities continue examining the co-pilot's actions and possible motives.

The broad recognition of Machchhar across India's political spectrum has placed the captain at the centre of national and international attention, as he continues his recovery following the emergency.
