CEC HOME PROTEST IN AGRA ESCALATES INTO ARRESTS AND ATTEMPT-TO-MURDER CASE
September 30, 2026
Six Congress workers have been arrested in Agra after a protest outside the ancestral residence of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resulted in allegations of trespass, property defacement and confrontation with police personnel.
The protest was part of the Congress campaign against the Election Commission over alleged irregularities in electoral-roll revision. Protesters gathered outside Kumar’s family residence in Vijay Nagar, where police said slogans and messages were written on the walls and gate using black paint.
An FIR was registered under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including sections relating to attempt to murder, causing hurt to a public servant, wrongful restraint, criminal force, house trespass, criminal intimidation and rioting. Police said eight people were named in the complaint, while several others were unidentified.
Police alleged that a home guard was injured while attempting to prevent the protesters from entering the premises. The authorities subsequently detained and arrested several people in connection with the incident, with a court remanding the arrested workers to judicial custody.
Congress leaders have disputed the police allegations and described the criminal charges as excessive and baseless. The party has called for examination of available CCTV footage to establish what occurred during the protest and has said it will provide legal assistance to the arrested workers.
The incident has intensified the political dispute surrounding the Election Commission and the ongoing controversy over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Authorities have meanwhile warned political and social organisations to conduct demonstrations only at designated locations and avoid protests at residential premises.
The investigation into the Agra incident is continuing, with police examining available evidence and attempting to establish the individual roles of those involved.
