Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) co-convenor Ashutosh Ranka and several party workers were detained by Assam Police in Guwahati on Sunday ahead of a scheduled volunteer meet-up, according to reports.
Ranka had travelled to Assam to meet volunteers and families affected by the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. He had also announced plans to visit schools and assess their condition as part of the group's activities in the state.
Police detained Ranka along with several participants as they arrived for the event, with reports saying the programme could not proceed. Some attendees were taken away in police vehicles.
Before his detention, Ranka accused the Assam government of attempting to prevent the group from examining issues concerning schools and the SIR process. These allegations were made by Ranka and have not been independently established in the reports reviewed.
