CONGRESS ACCUSES ELECTION CHIEF OF CONSTITUTIONAL BETRAYAL OVER VOTER FORM CHANGES

October 5, 2026

NEW DELHI — The Congress has launched a fresh attack on Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, accusing him of misleading the public over changes to Form 6 and alleging that the Election Commission acted in a manner that compromised constitutional safeguards.

The party alleged that Kumar had made misleading claims regarding the electoral-roll process and the changes introduced in Form 6, the application form used for inclusion of names in voter lists.

Congress leaders further accused the Election Commission of acting under pressure from the political leadership and alleged that the changes were designed to weaken safeguards surrounding the electoral registration process.

The allegations have intensified the Opposition’s broader confrontation with the Election Commission over electoral-roll revisions and procedures for verifying voters. Congress has repeatedly raised concerns about transparency and accountability in the functioning of the poll panel.

The party also alleged that Kumar had acted at the behest of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, describing the alleged conduct as a betrayal of the Constitution. These remain political allegations made by the Congress and have become part of an increasingly bitter dispute between the Opposition and the Election Commission.

The controversy comes amid continuing political disagreements over electoral reforms, voter-list revision and the powers exercised by the Election Commission. The latest accusations are expected to further sharpen the debate over the independence of India's electoral institutions and the credibility of the electoral process.
