CONGRESS ANNOUNCES NATIONWIDE PROTESTS DEMANDING CEC GYANESH KUMAR’S REMOVAL

September 24, 2026

NEW DELHI: The Congress has directed its state units to organise protest marches to State Election Commission offices on September 25, demanding the arrest and removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and an independent review of decisions taken during his tenure.

Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal said the party’s Pradesh Congress Committees would lead the demonstrations over allegations concerning electoral-roll revisions and the functioning of the Election Commission. The party has also demanded a comprehensive examination of changes made to electoral records under Kumar’s leadership.

As the second phase of the agitation, the Congress has instructed its District Congress Committees to organise protest marches at district collectorates on September 28. The demonstrations are linked to the ongoing controversy surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and reported differences among Election Commission officials.

The Election Commission has maintained that its final decisions, including those related to the SIR exercise, were taken unanimously. The Congress’s allegations and demands remain political claims and have not been established as findings of a judicial inquiry.
