November 2, 2026
CHENNAI: Cyclone Murasu has triggered heavy rainfall across Chennai and neighbouring districts of Tamil Nadu, disrupting normal life and prompting authorities to introduce precautionary measures. The worsening weather conditions have led to the closure of educational institutions and cancellations of flights at Chennai airport.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Chennai and Tiruvallur, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall. Schools and colleges in both districts were ordered to remain closed on Monday, November 2, as a precautionary measure.
Several flights operating to and from Chennai airport were also cancelled because of adverse weather conditions. Passengers were advised to contact their respective airlines for updated information regarding flight schedules.
Cyclone Murasu developed over the Bay of Bengal after a deep depression intensified into a cyclonic storm on Sunday, November 1. The weather system is moving towards the south Andhra Pradesh coast and is expected to cross between Nellore and Narsapur, near Ongole, during the night of November 2 or early morning of November 3.
According to the IMD forecast, the cyclone could bring sustained wind speeds of 100–110 kilometres per hour, with gusts reaching 120 kilometres per hour during landfall.
Authorities are monitoring the evolving weather situation and taking precautionary measures to minimise disruption and protect residents in vulnerable areas
