DELHI HIGH COURT STAYS JNU'S TERMINATION OF CONGRESS MP AND PROFESSOR ANGOMCHA BIMOL AKOIJAM
November 2, 2026
NEW DELHI, NOVEMBER 2: The Delhi High Court on Monday stayed Jawaharlal Nehru University's (JNU) decision to terminate Congress MP and former professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam following allegations of sexual harassment by female students.
Justice Anup J Bhambhani issued notice to the university on Akoijam's petition challenging his dismissal and scheduled the next hearing for January 2027. Akoijam represents the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha constituency and was associated with JNU's School of Social Sciences.
According to reports, at least 11 female students submitted complaints against him in May, alleging that he had invited students to his campus residence under the pretext of meetings or gatherings and attempted to sexually harass them. Some complainants also alleged that he made inappropriate and obscene remarks during classroom interactions.
JNU's Internal Complaints Committee conducted an inquiry into the allegations and recommended a major disciplinary penalty. Subsequently, the university administration dismissed Akoijam with immediate effect on October 9, following the committee's findings.
Akoijam has denied the allegations, describing the proceedings as politically motivated and questioning the procedure followed by the university. The Delhi Police has also registered an FIR in connection with the complaints, and its investigation remains underway.
The High Court's interim order halts the university's termination decision while the legal challenge proceeds. The allegations remain subject to the ongoing legal process.
