EC ACKNOWLEDGES INTERNAL OBJECTIONS BUT MAINTAINS SIR DECISIONS WERE UNANIMOUS

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission of India has acknowledged that internal objections were raised over certain decisions, including aspects of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. However, the poll panel maintained that its final decisions on the nationwide voter-list revision were unanimous.

The clarification came amid controversy following reports that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections on multiple occasions concerning electoral procedures and decisions taken by the Commission.

The ECI stated that differences of opinion, observations and technical suggestions are part of institutional deliberations. It emphasised that internal queries should not be interpreted as evidence of a division within the constitutional body.

The controversy has triggered strong criticism from opposition parties, which have questioned the transparency of the SIR process and demanded accountability from Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The Commission, however, reiterated that its final decisions, including those concerning SIR, were taken collectively and unanimously.
