ECI DISMISSES VIRAL RESIGNATION LETTER ATTRIBUTED TO CEC GYANESH KUMAR AS FAKE
September 28, 2026
The Election Commission of India on Sunday rejected as fake a purported resignation letter attributed to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar that had circulated widely on social media. The letter was addressed to President Droupadi Murmu and appeared to announce Kumar’s resignation from the post.
An Election Commission spokesperson confirmed that the document was not genuine. The clarification came amid heightened political scrutiny of the poll panel and demands from opposition parties for Kumar’s resignation over disagreements reportedly linked to the functioning of the commission and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The Election Commission has maintained that decisions concerning the SIR exercise were approved by all three election commissioners. The poll panel has also said that communications sent by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi to the Cabinet Secretary concerned the functioning of a senior official on deputation, rather than a policy dispute involving the Chief Election Commissioner.
The circulation of the purported resignation letter comes as political parties continue to debate the Election Commission’s handling of the electoral-roll revision process. The episode has also added to public discussion surrounding reported differences within the poll panel.
