FATAL REACTOR BLAST, TOXIC GAS IN THE AIR: FIVE WORKERS DIE IN GUJARAT’S BHARUCH INDUSTRIAL TRAGEDY
October 17, 2026
BHARUCH, GUJARAT, OCTOBER 17, 2026 — A powerful explosion at a chemical manufacturing unit in Gujarat’s Bharuch district killed five workers and injured five others on Friday night, triggering a leak of toxic methylene dichloride (MDC) gas and raising fresh concerns about industrial safety at chemical-processing facilities.
The blast occurred at approximately 10 pm during a hydrogenation process at SynZeal Pharmachem, located in the Saykha Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) area of Vagra taluka. The explosion was powerful enough to rip apart the reactor tank, scattering machinery parts across the factory premises, according to officials.
The five workers who died in the incident were identified as Jaydeep Maheshbhai Patel and Bhavik Dilipkumar Vasava, both residents of Amod; Vrund Talaviya, from Talala in Gir Somnath district; and Aniket Harilal Gautam and Arjunkumar Ramsingh Gautam, both natives of Uttar Pradesh.
The five injured workers were identified as Pavankumar Ramsingh Gautam, Mausamkumar Ramsevak Yadav, Shivdayal Ramavatar Yadav, Pratik Pravin Prajapati and Priyanshu Bahadurlal. They hail from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh and are undergoing treatment.
The explosion also triggered a leak of methylene dichloride gas, adding a hazardous chemical-release dimension to the industrial accident. An official from the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health confirmed that the gas leak followed the blast during the hydrogenation process.
SynZeal Pharmachem manufactures pharmaceutical intermediates and had established its facility in Saykha approximately a year ago, according to Bharuch Sub-Divisional Magistrate Manisha Manani. The incident has consequently drawn attention to the safety of operations at the relatively new manufacturing unit, although no official conclusion has yet been announced about what caused the explosion.
Following the incident, officials from the police, the Gujarat Pollution Control Board and the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health reached the site. The authorities began examining the circumstances surrounding the blast and the subsequent release of toxic gas.
The precise cause of the explosion remains under investigation. Officials have not yet established whether the incident resulted from equipment failure, a process-related malfunction or another factor. Any determination of responsibility or the circumstances that led to the reactor tank rupturing will depend on the findings of the investigation.
The incident has once again highlighted the potential consequences of accidents in chemical manufacturing, where a failure during industrial processing can cause both immediate fatalities and additional hazards through the release of dangerous substances. The combination of a reactor explosion and a toxic gas leak makes the investigation particularly significant for determining what happened inside the facility and whether safety procedures were adequately followed.
For the families of the five deceased workers, the industrial accident has brought sudden and devastating loss. Five other workers are receiving medical treatment for their injuries, while officials continue their examination of the factory premises.
As investigators work to establish the cause, the central questions remain unanswered: what triggered the explosion during the hydrogenation process, why the reactor tank ruptured with such force, and what circumstances led to the release of methylene dichloride gas. The findings of the ongoing investigation are expected to be crucial in clarifying the sequence of events behind the deadly accident at Bharuch’s chemical manufacturing unit.
