FOOD SAFETY WATCHDOG TIGHTENS THE COLD CHAIN: FSSAI WARNS BUSINESSES AGAINST TEMPERATURE VIOLATIONS
October 18, 2026
NEW DELHI, OCTOBER 18: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has directed food businesses handling perishable products to comply strictly with prescribed cold-chain requirements, warning of regulatory action against establishments found violating food-safety norms.
The directive focuses on maintaining appropriate temperature conditions throughout the storage, transportation and distribution of perishable food items. Such controls are essential to preserve product quality, slow microbial growth and reduce the risk of contamination before food reaches consumers.
Food businesses involved in handling temperature-sensitive products are expected to ensure that their refrigeration and storage systems function properly and that the required conditions are maintained throughout the supply chain. Failures in temperature control can accelerate spoilage and compromise food safety.
The warning places renewed responsibility on manufacturers, distributors, transporters, retailers and other food operators to strengthen monitoring and ensure compliance with applicable standards. Businesses found disregarding the requirements may face action under the relevant food-safety regulations.
The move underscores the importance of an effective cold chain in India's expanding food distribution network, particularly as perishable products travel through multiple stages before reaching consumers. Consistent temperature management is a critical safeguard against food deterioration and preventable health risks.
