IMPHAL: Four Tangkhul Naga civilians were allegedly shot dead by suspected militants near the India-Myanmar border in Manipur’s Kamjong district, police said on Friday. Their bodies were recovered from an isolated location near Pilong village, around 34 kilometres from the district headquarters.

The victims were identified as Vareishim Jajo, Phami Jajo, Betterson Jajo and Ningthem Kashak. Police said the bodies bore bullet injuries and were being taken to Kamjong district hospital for post-mortem examinations. Local accounts said a group of five villagers had been ambushed on Thursday and that one person escaped and alerted authorities.

The Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) and other Naga representatives alleged that militants associated with the Myanmar-based Kuki National Army (Burma) were responsible for the attack. The allegation has not been independently verified. Police said investigations were underway to establish the identity of those responsible.

Following the killings, the TNL announced a 24-hour emergency shutdown across its jurisdiction from 7 am on Friday. Essential services, including medical, power and fire services, as well as movements connected with funerals and condolence programmes, were exempted from the shutdown.

The incident comes amid renewed violence involving Naga and Kuki groups in parts of Manipur. Security forces have been deployed in the border region as authorities investigate the latest killings.
