FROM TEXTILE ENGINEERING TO A LIFE-SAVING COCKPIT BATTLE: INDIAN PILOT’S EXTRAORDINARY JOURNEY
October 1, 2026
Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar has received widespread recognition after his actions during a violent mid-air confrontation aboard a Flydubai flight helped avert a potential aviation disaster. The Mumbai-born captain was seriously injured when his co-pilot allegedly stabbed him inside the cockpit of a Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight on September 30.
Machchhar was commanding Flydubai Flight FZ1073, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 carrying 174 passengers, when the alleged attack triggered a dangerous sequence of events. Despite his injuries, he reportedly managed to resist the attacker and open the cockpit door, enabling passengers and cabin crew to intervene. Two off-duty Flydubai pilots travelling as passengers subsequently assisted in regaining control of the aircraft.
The aircraft experienced a steep descent before being diverted to Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. Machchhar was hospitalised and was reported to be in stable condition. The co-pilot, identified by Israeli officials as an Omani national, was detained for questioning as authorities began investigating the incident.
Machchhar’s journey into aviation began far from the cockpit. After completing his schooling, he pursued textile engineering with the intention of joining his family’s textile business. He later studied management in Mumbai, where an aviation seminar sparked his interest in flying at around the age of 19.
He subsequently trained in New Zealand and began his commercial aviation career with SpiceJet in 2011. Over approximately 11 years with the Indian airline, he progressed to become a commander and line training captain, helping mentor and train other pilots. In June 2022, he joined Flydubai as a captain, building a career spanning around 15 years and accumulating nearly 9,750 flying hours.
Machchhar has previously spoken about prioritising passenger safety over punctuality and maintaining a clear separation between his professional responsibilities and personal life. His approach to aviation has drawn renewed attention following the cockpit emergency, in which his reported actions helped create an opportunity for others to intervene.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly praised Machchhar for his courage during the incident. The episode has also highlighted the role of passengers, cabin crew and off-duty pilots who assisted in containing the confrontation and ensuring the aircraft’s safe landing.
Investigations into the cockpit attack and its circumstances are continuing, while Machchhar recovers from his injuries in Saudi Arabia
