GOVERNMENT EMPOWERS ITSELF TO INTERVENE IN AIRFARES, NEW RULES MANDATE TRANSPARENT COST BREAKDOWN
November 3, 2026
NEW DELHI, NOVEMBER 3: The Union government has introduced new rules empowering authorities to intervene in airline ticket pricing during extraordinary circumstances, while making it mandatory for airlines to provide passengers with a transparent breakdown of airfare components.
Under the revised provisions, the government can direct airlines to regulate or modify their ticket prices in situations involving exceptional circumstances, including disruptions that could lead to unreasonable increases in airfares. The move is intended to protect passengers from excessive pricing during emergencies and periods of significant travel disruption.
The new requirements also mandate airlines to disclose the different components of ticket prices, enabling passengers to understand the charges included in their bookings. This is expected to improve transparency and provide greater clarity about the relationship between base fares, taxes and additional charges.
The regulatory changes come amid growing concerns over sharp fluctuations in domestic airfares and demands for stronger passenger protection. The government has faced increasing scrutiny over airline pricing practices, particularly during periods of high demand and disruptions to transportation services.
The revised framework seeks to balance the commercial freedom of airlines with the government's responsibility to ensure fair pricing and protect consumers in extraordinary situations.
