INDIA BLOC TO FILE FRESH IMPEACHMENT MOTION AGAINST GYANESH KUMAR

September 25, 2026

NEW DELHI: The INDIA bloc is preparing to submit a fresh impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in both Houses of Parliament. According to sources cited by ThePrint, the proposed draft is expected to contain at least 12 allegations and may be submitted in the coming days.

The move follows a report that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections on at least 14 occasions over a 10-month period concerning decisions of the Election Commission, including voter registration, deletion and restoration of names, and electoral-roll revisions.

This would be the Opposition’s third attempt to initiate proceedings against Kumar. Earlier notices submitted in March were rejected by the Lok Sabha Speaker and Rajya Sabha Chairman, while a subsequent notice submitted in April was signed by 73 Opposition MPs and contained nine allegations of alleged misconduct.

Under parliamentary rules, a motion seeking the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner requires the support of at least 100 MPs in the Lok Sabha or 50 MPs in the Rajya Sabha for submission. The Election Commission has maintained that internal objections are part of institutional deliberation, while the BJP has rejected the Opposition’s allegations
