INDIA-US TRADE NEGOTIATIONS SET TO GAIN MOMENTUM AS PIYUSH GOYAL HEADS TO WASHINGTON

September 28, 2026

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will visit the United States from September 29 to October 5 to participate in the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting and hold bilateral discussions aimed at advancing the proposed India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).

Goyal is scheduled to attend the G20 meeting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on September 30 and October 1, at the invitation of US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. He is also expected to hold discussions with Greer to advance negotiations on a balanced trade agreement and finalise an interim deal in line with the joint statement issued by the two countries on February 7, 2026.

The visit comes amid continuing negotiations over trade tariffs and market access, with both countries seeking to resolve outstanding differences. Goyal recently stated that the trade agreement was close to completion but said its implementation would depend on India securing competitive advantages in the US market.

During his visit, Goyal will also meet business executives from major American companies across manufacturing, technology, retail, consumer goods and agribusiness sectors in Milwaukee and Chicago. He is expected to promote India as a manufacturing and investment destination and encourage greater commercial partnerships between Indian and American businesses.

The minister will also hold bilateral meetings with other G20 counterparts, focusing on international trade cooperation, market access and opportunities for Indian farmers, entrepreneurs, startups and micro, small and medium enterprises.
