JAISHANKAR RAISES INDIA’S CONCERNS OVER US SANCTIONS ON RUSSIA AND IRAN

NEW YORK: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar raised India’s concerns over the United States’ new sanctions legislation targeting Russia and Iran during a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

Jaishankar said India’s interests and concerns regarding the Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act (SRIA) were discussed during the meeting. The two ministers also discussed developments in the Gulf region and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The US law, signed by President Donald Trump last week, authorises Washington to impose tariffs of up to 100 per cent on goods from countries that are among the largest buyers of Russian crude oil or natural gas and continue making specified purchases after the law’s enactment. India has expressed concern that the measure could affect bilateral trade and international energy markets.

India has maintained that its energy policy is based on securing supplies for its population through diversified sourcing and changing market conditions. New Delhi has also previously told Washington that the possible impact of the sanctions on India’s trade and energy security had been communicated at senior levels.

Rubio did not publicly refer to the sanctions legislation in his account of the meeting, instead saying that the two countries discussed regional priorities and upcoming multilateral engagements. Rubio is scheduled to visit India in October.
