JAMIA STUDENT AGITATION SECURES KEY CONCESSIONS AS UNIVERSITY SETS 2027 ELECTION ROADMAP
October 29, 2026
NEW DELHI, OCTOBER 29, 2026: Jamia Millia Islamia has announced a time-bound roadmap for restoring its elected students’ union and agreed to revoke disciplinary action against protesters following an 18-day agitation demanding democratic representation on campus.
Under the university administration’s latest decision, the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU) constitution must be approved and implemented by May 15, 2027. Elections will be held within six weeks of the commencement of the next academic session, scheduled to begin on July 16, 2027.
The announcement addresses a central demand of students, who have been seeking the restoration of the elected union, which has remained defunct since 2006. Earlier assurances had failed to resolve the dispute because students demanded a definite deadline for completing the constitutional process.
The administration has also agreed to revoke disciplinary proceedings, show-cause notices, suspensions and campus-entry restrictions imposed in connection with the protests.
The agitation included hunger strikes and demonstrations, with protesters calling for a clear election schedule and greater student participation in university governance. Students marked the institution’s 106th Foundation Day by organising an alternative gathering rather than participating in the official celebrations.
The university’s decision represents a significant development in the ongoing dispute over student representation. The next steps will involve completing the union constitution and conducting elections according to the announced timetable.
For the protesting students, the challenge now is to ensure that the administration’s commitments translate into the actual restoration of an elected students’ union.
