JEWAR’S AVIATION LANDMARK TO CARRY MODI’S NAME AS YOGI CABINET APPROVES AIRPORT RENAMING

October 9, 2026

The Noida International Airport at Jewar in Uttar Pradesh will be named Narendra Modi International Airport Noida, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced on Friday after the state cabinet approved the proposal.

The decision places Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s name on one of the country’s major greenfield aviation projects, developed to strengthen air connectivity across the National Capital Region and reduce pressure on Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Announcing the cabinet’s decision, Adityanath said the proposal to rename the airport had received approval from the Uttar Pradesh government. The airport is located at Jewar in Gautam Buddha Nagar district and is a significant part of the state’s infrastructure development programme.

The airport was inaugurated by Modi on March 28, 2026, and began commercial flight operations on June 15. IndiGo operated the inaugural commercial flight, arriving from Lucknow, marking the start of passenger services at the new facility.

Developed under a public-private partnership involving Yamuna International Airport Private Limited, a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, and the government, the airport’s first phase features a runway and passenger terminal designed to handle up to 12 million passengers annually.

The project is intended to serve the growing demand for air travel in Delhi and western Uttar Pradesh, while supporting trade, tourism and regional economic development. Further expansion is planned to increase the airport’s capacity substantially over the coming decades.

The renaming decision marks a new chapter in the airport’s public identity as it develops into a major aviation hub for northern India.
