Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has dismissed Professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam from its services following an internal inquiry into allegations of sexual harassment, the university said on Friday.

The dismissal follows an investigation by the university’s Internal Committee, which recommended major disciplinary punishment against the professor. JNU said the decision was taken after due process and consideration of the available facts and the committee’s report.

Akoijam was associated with the Centre for the Study of Social Systems under the university’s School of Social Sciences. The dismissal order was issued by Vice-Chancellor Santishree D. Pandit and takes immediate effect.

According to reports, 11 female students had lodged complaints against the professor. The matter had also prompted protests on campus, with student representatives demanding disciplinary action.

Akoijam is also a Congress member of Parliament representing the Inner Manipur constituency in the Lok Sabha. His dismissal from the university marks a significant development in the disciplinary proceedings initiated following the complaints.

The university’s announcement confirms the termination of his academic services following the inquiry. Further details of the committee’s findings were not included in the brief statement published by JNU.
