LALREMSIAMI’S MAGIC MOMENT ENDS FOUR-DECADE WAIT AS INDIA CLAIMS ASIAN HOCKEY CROWN
October 2, 2026
India’s women’s hockey team ended a 44-year wait for Asian Games gold with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over defending champions China in the final at Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Lalremsiami produced the decisive moment with a powerful reverse-stick strike in the 10th minute, giving India the lead that ultimately delivered the title.
China began strongly and repeatedly entered India’s circle during the opening stages, but India’s defence held firm. After taking the lead, the Indian side absorbed sustained pressure and protected its narrow advantage through disciplined defending.
Goalkeeper Savita Punia played a crucial role in preserving the lead when China earned a penalty stroke. She made a one-handed save to deny Zhang Ying, keeping India ahead as the match entered its decisive stages.
China continued searching for an equaliser during the second half, but India repeatedly disrupted their attacks and prevented the defending champions from finding the net. The final whistle confirmed India’s second women’s hockey gold at the Asian Games, 44 years after their previous triumph in 1982.
The victory also secured India a direct qualification place for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. India had previously reached the Asian Games final in 1998 and 2018, winning silver on both occasions.
The final also marked Lalremsiami’s 200th senior international appearance for India. Her goal on the landmark occasion proved to be the only score of the match and became the defining moment of a historic campaign.
India’s triumph restores the team to the top of the Asian Games podium and provides an Olympic qualification pathway alongside a long-awaited continental title.
