LPU SUSPENDS CLASSES FOR 10 DAYS, POSTPONES EXAMS AMID CAMPUS UNREST

September 28, 2026

Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Punjab’s Phagwara has suspended regular classes for 10 days and postponed its mid-term examinations following protests and unrest on the campus over allegations concerning the alleged sexual assault of a female student. The university’s decision takes effect from September 28.

The protests began after claims circulated on social media alleging that a female student had been raped on campus. Police said the allegations were under investigation and that an FIR had been registered against unidentified persons. An SIT has also been constituted to investigate the complaint, with officials examining available evidence, including CCTV footage and other material.

The demonstrations later escalated, with students blocking National Highway-44 and clashes reported between protesters and police. Reports also said university and police property was damaged during the unrest. Authorities subsequently deployed additional police forces to restore order on the campus.

LPU said the temporary suspension was intended to safeguard students. Students have been permitted to travel to their hometowns in consultation with parents or guardians, while those remaining on campus have been advised to stay inside their hostels or residences and avoid involvement in unrest-related activities. The university has also said that a revised examination schedule will be communicated separately.

The university has disputed claims circulating on social media, describing them as rumours, while the police investigation into the allegations continues
