Security forces have arrested a suspected militant and a student leader in separate operations in Imphal East district of Manipur in connection with alleged kidnapping and extortion activities, police said.

Waikhom Hero Meetei, 23, described by police as an active member of the Kangleipak Communist Party (Nongdrenkhomba), was arrested from Sanjenbam Khunou. Investigators allege that he was involved in the kidnapping of a woman from her residence in Imphal East.

In a separate operation at Luwangsangbam, security forces arrested 24-year-old Waikhom Sena, president of the Manipur Students Federation. Police alleged that Sena was an active member of the banned National Revolutionary Front Manipur and had been involved in preparing and publishing material on behalf of the outfit on social media platforms and in newspapers.

Police also alleged that Sena was involved in unauthorised financial transactions. Security forces reportedly recovered ₹2.67 lakh, which police described as allegedly extorted money, along with a laptop from his possession.

The arrests form part of continuing security operations against insurgent groups and alleged extortion networks in Manipur. Recent operations in Imphal East and other districts have also resulted in the arrest of suspected cadres and the recovery of alleged extortion-related materials.

The allegations against the arrested individuals remain subject to investigation and further legal proceedings.
