MODI UNVEILS 2047 VISION, TARGETS DEVELOPED INDIA AND THIRD-LARGEST ECONOMY
October 8, 2026
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has used the 25th anniversary of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance's return to power to outline an ambitious long-term vision for India, placing the goal of a developed nation by 2047 alongside the objective of making the country the world's third-largest economy.
Addressing a gathering marking the NDA government's political milestone, Modi highlighted the government's development agenda and presented India's economic expansion as a central pillar of its long-term national strategy. He said the country must combine rapid economic growth with infrastructure development, technological advancement and improvements in living standards.
The Prime Minister linked the 2047 target to the centenary of India's Independence, describing the period ahead as an opportunity to transform the country's economic and institutional capabilities. He also emphasised the importance of strengthening domestic manufacturing, innovation, investment and employment to support sustained growth.
Modi portrayed the NDA's tenure as a period of major transformation and argued that India's growing economic weight would strengthen its influence internationally. The government has increasingly presented the ambition of becoming a developed economy by 2047 as a defining national objective.
The targets, however, will require India to sustain high economic growth over several decades while addressing challenges involving employment, inequality, infrastructure, human development and the quality of economic opportunities available to its expanding population.
