MONSOON DOWNPOUR INTERRUPTS OPPOSITION’S PLAN TO HOLD SYMBOLIC IMPEACHMENT PROCEEDINGS AGAINST GYANESH KUMAR
October 31, 2026
NEW DELHI, OCTOBER 31, 2026: Heavy rainfall has forced the INDIA bloc to postpone its planned symbolic impeachment proceedings against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, disrupting the opposition's latest political initiative amid its continuing confrontation with the Election Commission over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The proposed proceedings were intended to highlight opposition allegations concerning electoral irregularities and the removal of eligible voters' names during the revision of electoral rolls. Opposition parties have repeatedly questioned the transparency of the exercise and raised concerns about its potential impact on voters' democratic rights.
The INDIA bloc has accused the Election Commission of failing to adequately address concerns surrounding the SIR process. The opposition's campaign has also focused on allegations of electoral manipulation, commonly described by its leaders as vote chori.
The planned symbolic proceedings were intended as a political demonstration of the opposition's dissatisfaction with the functioning of the constitutional authority responsible for conducting elections. However, the rainfall forced organisers to defer the event, with a revised schedule expected to be announced subsequently.
The development comes amid an intensifying political exchange between the BJP and opposition parties. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has challenged opposition leaders to debate their allegations in Parliament, while the INDIA bloc has continued to demand greater accountability and transparency in electoral-roll revision.
Although the postponement was attributed to weather conditions, the broader dispute over the SIR exercise remains unresolved. The controversy continues to raise questions about electoral transparency, institutional accountability and safeguards against the exclusion of eligible voters from India's democratic process.
