COIMBATORE — A sailor from West Bengal serving in the Indian Navy has been arrested in Coimbatore over allegations that he leaked sensitive defence-related information to a Pakistani intelligence operative posing as a woman, raising fresh concerns about espionage and security within the armed forces.

The accused allegedly came into contact with the operative through digital communication and was subsequently persuaded to share confidential information concerning the Indian Navy. Investigators suspect that the exchanges involved sensitive military details, although the precise nature and extent of the information allegedly disclosed remain under examination.

The arrest followed an investigation into suspected espionage activities and the possible use of social media and online messaging platforms by foreign intelligence networks to establish contact with Indian defence personnel. Authorities are examining the communication records and other digital evidence to establish the duration of the alleged relationship and whether additional individuals were involved.

The case has brought renewed attention to the vulnerability of military personnel to online manipulation, including tactics in which intelligence operatives allegedly use fabricated identities and personal relationships to obtain restricted information. Security agencies are expected to investigate whether established safeguards were bypassed and whether the alleged disclosure compromised any operational or strategic information.

The arrest also highlights the continuing challenge faced by Indian security agencies in identifying and disrupting suspected foreign intelligence networks operating through digital platforms. Further investigation is underway to determine the full extent of the alleged breach and identify any wider espionage links.
