OIC REAFFIRMS POSITION ON KASHMIR, INDIA REJECTS COMMUNIQUÉ

NEW DELHI: The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has reaffirmed its support for what it described as the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination, prompting a sharp response from India.

The OIC Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir met in New York on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The group includes Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Niger. In its communiqué, the OIC called for the reversal of measures taken by India since 2019 and urged greater international attention to the Kashmir issue.

India rejected the communiqué, with the Ministry of External Affairs describing its references to Jammu and Kashmir as unwarranted and factually incorrect. New Delhi said the OIC had no standing to comment on matters it considers internal to India and reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are integral parts of the country.

The MEA also criticised the OIC for providing a platform to Pakistan on the issue and accused Islamabad of supporting terrorism. Pakistan, meanwhile, has urged the OIC to maintain a unified position on Kashmir at international forums and called for the reversal of measures introduced by India since August 2019.
