OPPOSITION CONFRONTS POLL WATCHDOG AS DELHI PROTEST ENDS IN DETENTIONS

October 6, 2026

NEW DELHI — A major political confrontation unfolded in the national capital as INDIA bloc leaders marched towards the Election Commission, demanding answers over electoral-roll revisions and seeking a meeting with the poll panel's top officials.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra entered Akashvani Bhawan during the protest, while several other Opposition leaders were detained by Delhi Police as authorities stopped the march from proceeding towards the Election Commission's office.

The demonstration brought together a large number of Opposition MPs, who sought to press their concerns directly before the Election Commission. The INDIA bloc has raised allegations surrounding the electoral-roll revision process and questioned the transparency and accountability of the election authorities.

The detention of several leaders added to the political confrontation, with Opposition parties portraying the police action as an attempt to prevent elected representatives from presenting their grievances before a constitutional institution.

The episode comes amid an increasingly intense political dispute over electoral processes, voter rolls and the functioning of the Election Commission. The Opposition has continued to demand greater transparency from the poll body, while the confrontation in Delhi has further sharpened the political debate over the credibility and independence of India's electoral institutions.

The march and subsequent detentions have once again placed the relationship between the Opposition, law-enforcement agencies and the Election Commission at the centre of national political attention.
