OPPOSITION CRITICISES BITCHAT RESTRICTIONS AS DEBATE OVER DIGITAL FREEDOM ERUPTS
October 6, 2026
NEW DELHI — A fresh political controversy has emerged over restrictions on the use of the decentralised messaging application Bitchat, with Opposition voices questioning the government's decision and warning against measures that could limit digital communication during public protests.
The controversy intensified after the application, which has been used by protesters for communication without relying on conventional internet infrastructure, came under regulatory restrictions. Opposition leaders questioned the timing of the move and argued that limiting a communication platform during demonstrations could raise wider concerns about freedom of expression and the ability of citizens to organise peacefully.
Bitchat has attracted attention because it is designed to facilitate messaging through nearby devices using Bluetooth-based, decentralised communication. Its ability to function without conventional centralised servers has made it particularly relevant in situations where internet connectivity is disrupted or restricted.
The restrictions have therefore triggered a broader debate over the balance between public-order concerns and digital freedoms. Critics argue that authorities should clearly explain the necessity and legal basis of restrictions affecting communication tools, particularly when they coincide with political demonstrations.
The development comes amid heightened tensions surrounding Opposition protests and allegations concerning electoral processes. The dispute over Bitchat has added a new technological dimension to the political confrontation, raising questions about how governments should regulate decentralised digital communication while protecting legitimate democratic activity.
