OPPOSITION SHOWDOWN IN DELHI AS RAHUL AND PRIYANKA AMONG MPs DETAINED IN POLL PANEL PROTEST

NEW DELHI — A major political confrontation unfolded in the national capital as Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several other Opposition MPs were detained during a protest demanding action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The Opposition leaders were taking part in a march towards the Election Commission, where they sought to raise concerns over electoral-roll revisions and alleged irregularities in the electoral process. The demonstration was stopped by Delhi Police before the leaders could reach the poll panel's office.

The detentions intensified the political dispute between the Opposition and the Election Commission. Opposition parties accused the authorities of preventing elected representatives from presenting their concerns directly before the constitutional body responsible for conducting elections.

Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly questioned the functioning of the electoral machinery and demanded greater transparency in the preparation and revision of voter lists. The Opposition has also called for accountability from the Election Commission and sought the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar.

The confrontation resulted in heightened political activity around central Delhi, with security personnel deployed to prevent the protesters from proceeding further. The detention of prominent Opposition figures added to the tension and transformed the march into another major flashpoint between the government, Opposition parties and election authorities.

The episode has once again brought electoral transparency and institutional accountability to the centre of India's political debate, with the Opposition vowing to continue raising its concerns over the country's electoral process.
