OPPOSITION SHOWDOWN IN DELHI AS RAHUL GANDHI AND KHARGE STAGE DHARNA AFTER MARCH HALTED
October 6, 2026
Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, joined by other INDIA bloc MPs, staged a sit-in in New Delhi after police stopped their planned march towards the Election Commission.
The opposition MPs were attempting to reach the poll panel to raise their objections over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls and demand greater transparency in the election process. Their march was halted by police, leading the leaders to begin a dharna at the spot.
The confrontation reflects the growing political tension between the opposition and the Election Commission over voter-list revisions and electoral procedures. Opposition parties have repeatedly alleged that discrepancies in electoral rolls could affect the fairness of elections, while the poll authorities have defended the integrity of the electoral process.
The protest brought several senior opposition leaders together, turning the halted march into a broader demonstration against what they described as restrictions on their right to approach the constitutional election authority.
The episode is likely to intensify the political confrontation over electoral rolls, particularly as opposition parties continue to demand explanations from the Election Commission and greater safeguards for voters.
With the dispute increasingly moving from Parliament to the streets of the national capital, the Election Commission has come under renewed political scrutiny over its handling of electoral administration and voter-list controversies.
