PRASHANT BHUSHAN DEMANDS DEFENCE OF ELECTORAL DEMOCRACY, BJP HITS BACK OVER REGIME-CHANGE REMARKS
October 16, 2026
Senior advocate Prashant Bhushan on Thursday intensified his criticism of the Union government, asserting that a change of government would be justified if electoral democracy continued to be undermined. Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi alongside student leader Neha Bora and activist Abhijit Dipke, Bhushan rejected the ruling establishment’s allegation that the ongoing protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar were an opposition-backed attempt to bring about regime change.
Bhushan maintained that the campaign was aimed at protecting electoral democracy and defending citizens’ voting rights amid allegations of irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. He argued that seeking a change of government through democratic means was a legitimate right of citizens.
The remarks prompted a sharp response from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which accused Rahul Gandhi’s political camp of encouraging anarchy and undermining constitutional institutions. The confrontation has further intensified the political dispute surrounding the Election Commission, the revision of voter lists and demands for accountability from the country’s electoral authorities.
The controversy highlights growing tensions between opposition leaders, civil society activists and the ruling party over electoral transparency, institutional independence and the protection of democratic rights in India.
