RAHUL-PRIYANKA PROTEST BREAKS INTO HIGH-VOLTAGE SHOWDOWN AS OPPOSITION CHALLENGES ELECTION COMMISSION
October 7, 2026
NEW DELHI, OCTOBER 7: Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra intensified the Opposition's confrontation with the Election Commission after joining a dramatic protest in New Delhi against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and alleged irregularities in electoral rolls.
The demonstration followed an Opposition march towards the Election Commission headquarters, which was stopped by security personnel. Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi subsequently joined the protest, with a large group of MPs and party workers gathering in support of the campaign.
The protesters raised slogans against the Election Commission and demanded greater transparency in the preparation and revision of electoral rolls. The Congress has alleged that changes to voter lists could undermine the integrity of elections, while the poll panel has rejected allegations of wrongdoing.
The confrontation continued for several hours, eventually leading to the detention of a large number of protesters, including opposition MPs. The detentions further sharpened the political battle between the Congress-led Opposition and the BJP over the functioning of the Election Commission.
The episode has added a new flashpoint to an already intense political dispute, with the Opposition portraying the protests as a defence of democratic and voting rights, while the government and BJP have accused Congress leaders of attempting to politicise the electoral process.
