RELIEF FROM THE SKY TURNS TRAGIC AS FLOOD VICTIM DIES DURING AIRDROP IN BIHAR

A 58-year-old man died in flood-hit Saran after a relief packet dropped from a helicopter allegedly struck him during an aerial distribution operation.

A flood-relief operation in Bihar's Saran district turned tragic on Friday when 58-year-old Anil Kumar Singh died near a relief camp in Parshurampur village, where supplies were being dropped from a helicopter for people affected by flooding.

According to police, the initial account indicates that a packet of relief material allegedly struck Singh on the head as it was dropped from the aircraft. However, authorities said the precise cause of death would be established only after a post-mortem examination. Police also noted that no visible injury marks were found on Singh's body.

The incident occurred as aerial relief operations were being conducted in areas severely affected by flooding. With several villages cut off or difficult to reach by road, helicopters have been used to deliver dry rations and other essential supplies to stranded residents.

A second incident was also reported in the same area. A woman sustained injuries after the downdraft generated by a low-flying helicopter reportedly blew away part of a structure and struck her. She was taken for medical treatment and was reported to be out of danger.

The death has drawn attention to the challenges involved in distributing relief supplies from the air, particularly in densely populated areas where large numbers of people gather beneath aircraft awaiting assistance.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding Singh's death, while the post-mortem report is expected to clarify whether the falling relief material caused the fatality or whether another medical event was responsible.

The incident has highlighted the difficult balance between delivering urgently needed assistance to flood-hit communities and ensuring that emergency relief operations themselves remain safe for vulnerable residents.
