SAHIL WAKODE CASE: CRIME BRANCH CONDUCTS EIGHT-HOUR QUESTIONING OF PARENTS
September 26, 2026
MUMBAI: The Mumbai Crime Branch questioned the parents of IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode for nearly eight hours on Friday as part of its investigation into his death, according to a police official. Investigators have reportedly recorded statements from 20 people while examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The investigation has also focused on Wakode’s locked mobile phone. Forensic experts are attempting to unlock the device, with several missed-call notifications reportedly visible on its screen. Police are examining digital and other evidence as they work to reconstruct the events preceding his death.
Wakode’s parents have alleged that their son faced caste-based discrimination at IIT Bombay. They staged a hunger strike at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan on Thursday to raise their concerns and seek action over the allegations. The claims remain subject to investigation.
The case has triggered protests and wider debate over student welfare, institutional accountability and alleged caste discrimination at the institute. IIT Bombay has initiated institutional measures, while the Crime Branch continues to gather statements and examine available evidence.
