SONAM WANGCHUK BACKS OCTOBER 2 PROTEST, MAY NOT ATTEND IN PERSON

September 27, 2026

Activist Sonam Wangchuk has extended his support to the Cockroach Janta Party’s proposed October 2 protest seeking accountability from Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, while indicating that he may not personally attend the demonstration.

Wangchuk said movements seeking greater accountability in the country and the electoral process deserved support. He added that he did not need to participate physically in every movement, particularly when other groups were already mobilising around the issue.

His comments come amid an ongoing controversy surrounding the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Reports have highlighted objections reportedly raised by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi on several decisions related to voter registration, deletion and restoration of names. The Election Commission has maintained that decisions concerning the SIR received the unanimous approval of all three commissioners.

The Cockroach Janta Party has announced that its protest will begin in Mumbai on October 2, with the campaign seeking greater accountability from the Election Commission. Wangchuk also stressed the importance of the electoral process in a democratic system and referred to October 2, Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary, as a significant day for peaceful protest.
