SUPREME COURT RELAXES FIRECRACKER RESTRICTIONS, PERMITS GREEN CRACKERS IN DELHI-NCR FOR TWO DAYS
November 2, 2026
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has permitted the use of certified green firecrackers in Delhi-NCR on November 7 and 8, introducing a limited relaxation of restrictions on firecracker use amid continuing concerns over air pollution in the national capital region.
Under the court's directions, green firecrackers may be burst between 6 am and 7 am and again from 8 pm to 10 pm on both days. The permission is restricted to the specified dates and time slots, with the objective of balancing public celebrations against the need to control air pollution.
Green firecrackers are designed to reduce emissions and particulate pollution compared with conventional firecrackers. However, they are not pollution-free, and their use can still contribute to deteriorating air quality.
The restrictions come against the backdrop of persistent concerns over Delhi-NCR's air pollution, particularly during the winter months when unfavourable meteorological conditions can trap pollutants close to the ground.
The limited relaxation does not amount to unrestricted permission to use conventional firecrackers. Residents must comply with the court's directions and applicable enforcement measures governing the sale and use of permitted products.
The decision highlights the continuing challenge of balancing festive traditions and public celebrations with environmental protection and public health in one of India's most pollution-affected urban regions.
