SUPREME COURT TAKES UP CHALLENGE TO CEC GYANESH KUMAR OVER ELECTORAL ROLL REVISION
October 5, 2026
NEW DELHI — The Supreme Court is set to hear petitions concerning Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, bringing the contentious exercise under renewed judicial scrutiny.
The petitions raise questions over the manner in which the electoral-roll revision is being conducted and the safeguards available to voters during the process. The proceedings could determine how far the poll panel can proceed with the exercise while concerns over possible exclusion of eligible voters remain.
The Election Commission has maintained that electoral rolls must be periodically updated to remove inaccuracies and ensure that eligible citizens are properly represented on the voter lists. Critics, however, have questioned the procedure and sought greater transparency in the verification process.
The case has assumed wider political significance, with opposition parties repeatedly alleging that the revision could disproportionately affect sections of the electorate. The Election Commission has rejected allegations that the exercise is politically motivated.
The Supreme Court’s intervention is therefore being closely watched as it examines the balance between the Election Commission’s constitutional authority to maintain electoral rolls and the fundamental importance of protecting every eligible voter’s right to participate in elections.
The hearing could have wider implications for the ongoing electoral-roll revision and for the relationship between the judiciary and the country’s constitutional election machinery.
