SUPREME COURT TAKES UP DELHI SEXUAL ASSAULT CASES AS SAFETY CONCERNS INTENSIFY
September 29, 2026
The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of a series of recent sexual assault cases in Delhi-NCR, expressing concern over what it described as a failure of authorities to ensure basic public safety. The proceedings come after several incidents involving women and minors drew public attention.
During the proceedings, the court questioned the Delhi government and police over measures being taken to prevent such crimes and stressed that ensuring public safety is a fundamental responsibility of the administration.
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi also commented on the issue, arguing that women should not face restrictions on their freedom and movement because of crimes committed against them. He called for safer public spaces and stronger measures to prevent sexual violence rather than limiting women's mobility.
The Supreme Court's intervention focuses on the institutional response to sexual violence, including policing, prevention, emergency response and the safety of women and children in public spaces. The court has sought responses from the concerned authorities on the steps being taken to address the concerns.
The proceedings are expected to examine whether existing security arrangements and administrative mechanisms are adequate to protect women and girls in the national capital region. The case also places renewed attention on the need for effective prevention, prompt investigation and accountability in cases of sexual violence.
