UTTARAKHAND’S ELECTORAL ROLL SHRINKS SHARPLY AFTER SIR, 9.31 LAKH NAMES EXCLUDED

October 4, 2026

DEHRADUN — Uttarakhand’s final electoral roll has recorded a substantial reduction in voter names following the completion of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), with around 9.31 lakh names left out of the revised list.

The final voter roll now contains approximately 71.58 lakh electors, marking a significant change from the earlier electoral database. The revision process was undertaken to identify and remove entries considered ineligible, duplicate, deceased or otherwise unsuitable for inclusion.

The large-scale reduction has renewed attention on the verification process and the criteria used to determine which names were retained or excluded. The exercise has also prompted political and public discussion over voter rights and the accessibility of mechanisms for individuals whose names have been removed.

Election authorities are expected to provide avenues for eligible citizens to seek corrections or restoration of their names in accordance with the applicable electoral procedures.

The revised roll represents a major change in Uttarakhand’s electoral landscape and is likely to remain a subject of political scrutiny as parties and voters assess the impact of the SIR exercise.
