WOUNDED IN THE COCKPIT, INDIAN CAPTAIN’S COURAGE HELPS SAVE 174 LIVES ABOARD FLYDUBAI JET

Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar has received international recognition after his actions during a violent mid-air cockpit confrontation aboard a Flydubai aircraft helped avert a potential aviation catastrophe, drawing praise from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The incident occurred on September 30 aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv with 174 people on board. During the flight, the co-pilot allegedly attacked Machchhar with a knife in an attempt to seize control of the aircraft and sabotage its systems. The confrontation reportedly triggered a sudden and dangerous descent, raising fears for the safety of everyone aboard.

Despite suffering serious stab wounds, Machchhar reportedly resisted the attack and managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to intervene. Their efforts helped overpower and restrain the alleged attacker, while two off-duty Flydubai pilots travelling on the aircraft assisted in regaining control of the situation.

The aircraft was diverted to Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia, where it made a safe emergency landing. All 174 people aboard survived. Machchhar was hospitalised in Tabuk for medical treatment and was reported to be in stable condition, while the co-pilot was detained by Saudi authorities as investigations began.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Machchhar’s courage and presence of mind, expressing the nation’s pride in the captain’s actions and wishing him a speedy recovery. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also paid tribute to the Indian pilot, describing his actions as extraordinary bravery that helped prevent a catastrophic disaster.

The incident has drawn attention to Machchhar’s professional experience and aviation career, including his previous service with SpiceJet before joining Flydubai as a captain in 2022. His response under extreme circumstances has also highlighted the contribution of passengers, cabin crew and fellow pilots who intervened during the emergency.

Investigations by the relevant authorities are continuing to establish the precise sequence of events, the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack and the motive behind it. Flydubai has also been cooperating with the authorities as the aviation incident undergoes further scrutiny.
