2021 NANDIGRAM INJURY ROW REOPENS AS BENGAL GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES FRESH INVESTIGATION
October 3, 2026
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced a fresh investigation into the leg injury sustained by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during the 2021 Assembly election campaign in Nandigram, reviving a political controversy from the state’s previous electoral contest.
Addressing a press conference at Nabanna on Saturday, Adhikari alleged that Banerjee had misrepresented her injury and claimed that medical records from the Bangur Institute of Neuroscience showed no evidence of a fracture or dislocation. He said the state government would initiate an inquiry and indicated that further details would be disclosed after the Model Code of Conduct is lifted on October 9.
Banerjee sustained injuries to her left leg and waist on March 10, 2021, while campaigning in Nandigram. She had alleged that unidentified individuals pushed her against the door of her vehicle, while subsequent medical assessments recorded bone and ligament injuries to her left ankle and foot, alongside other injuries. She was treated at SSKM Hospital in Kolkata and resumed campaigning in a wheelchair after her discharge.
The Election Commission's observers had previously concluded that the incident was accidental and found no evidence of a deliberate attack. Adhikari's latest announcement has brought the episode back into the political spotlight, with the proposed investigation expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and the medical records from that period.
