AFTER PUJA STAMPEDE, BENGAL RECALLS NINE IPS OFFICERS TO REINFORCE CROWD-MANAGEMENT SECURITY

October 18, 2026

KOLKATA, OCTOBER 18: The West Bengal government has brought back nine IPS officers with experience in crowd control to strengthen security arrangements and prevent another tragedy during the Durga Puja festivities, following the deadly stampede in Kolkata.

The decision reflects the administration’s renewed focus on managing large gatherings, regulating visitor movement and improving policing at crowded public events. The recalled officers are expected to contribute their experience in handling mass gatherings and coordinating crowd-control operations.

The move comes amid heightened concern over public safety after the stampede raised questions about crowd management and the adequacy of arrangements at popular Puja destinations. Large numbers of visitors, congested access routes and the difficulty of controlling sudden surges in crowds have brought the challenges of festival security into sharper focus.

The return of the nine officers is intended to reinforce the police machinery during the remaining festive period. Effective deployment, coordinated monitoring and timely intervention will be critical to preventing overcrowding and ensuring safer movement for pandal-hoppers.

The government’s step signals a push to strengthen on-ground policing as authorities face pressure to ensure that the remainder of the Durga Puja celebrations proceeds without another major crowd-related disaster.
