BENGAL BJP DEMANDS A FRESH ELECTORAL ROLL OVERHAUL, CITING VIOLENCE DURING PREVIOUS SIR

October 18, 2026

KOLKATA: West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya has called for a fresh Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state, arguing that the previous exercise was marred by violence and failed to ensure a satisfactory electoral environment.

Bhattacharya maintained that another revision was necessary to address concerns surrounding the existing electoral rolls and strengthen the credibility of the electoral process. His demand comes amid an ongoing political confrontation in West Bengal over voter-list verification and the responsibilities of the Election Commission.

The BJP has repeatedly raised concerns about irregularities in electoral rolls, while the ruling Trinamool Congress has challenged the party’s position on voter verification. The latest demand is likely to intensify the debate over the conduct, fairness and political implications of the SIR exercise in the state.

The controversy places renewed focus on the need for transparent procedures, adequate safeguards for eligible voters and an electoral revision process that prevents both wrongful exclusions and the inclusion of ineligible names.
